FREE A Cultural Sense of Place: Newberg History for the Curious

Ages 14 & up

Learn why Newberg has some of the most interesting history of any city in Oregon in this six-week course.  The class explores local history from its early beginnings to the present, from Newberg to the east end of Yamhill County.  Perfect space for anyone who has always been curious about Newberg – the Grubby End.  Learn about Ewing Young and the Oregon Trail, a well-known  U.S. president and America’s best-known comic book illustrator.  Not to mention national sports champions, movie stars, the man who memorized the Bible, and much more.  Five classroom sessions are followed by a field-trip to see the places where local history was made.

MEET THE TEACHER:
George Edmonston Jr.

George Edmonston Jr. has lived in Newberg since 1998 and holds degrees in history from Louisiana State University and the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.  In 2010 George founded the Newberg Historical Society. His column, “Tales from the Grubby End,” now appears twice monthly in The Newberg Graphic. For the past 10 years he has written numerous articles on Newberg and Yamhill County history for the McMinnville News-Register and The Newberg Graphic. He has also served as a volunteer history tour guide for the Newberg Adult Enrichment Center and the city’s annual Camellia Festival.
