We all carry within us a creative core from which we have the power to heal, make art, and awaken our senses to the world.  Through guided exercises in poetry and journaling, we will look inward to our memories, dreams and experience—as well as outward to the natural world—as we push ourselves toward blossoming.  In this workshop you will reconnect with yourself, free your creativity, and find ways to best express your unique voice on the page.  No previous poetry or journaling experience is necessary—you already have what it takes to blossom.

Ages 16 and up.

This class includes four, 3-hour lessons.

Materials Fee: $15 paid to the instructor at the first class for a Large Moleskine Ruled Notebook, and class materials.

Supplies List: Writing utensil of choice

An exploration of clay artworks for budding artists! Students will discover the endless possibilities of working with malleable clay to make pottery, whimsical sculpture, ceramic tiles, and more. All materials, glazing, and firing included.

Ages 7-13

This class includes four, one and a half-hour lessons.

Ceramic Decorating Techniques Workshop with Debi Nelson & Jon Conchuratt

This workshop will cover altering clay surfaces by using stamped patterns, paddling, fluting, and carving into the clay.  We will be using different colored slips and techniques like marbling, feathering, and combing to create visual patterns.  Also covered will be using wax resist patterns, spatter decoration, the use of oxide washes over glazes to alter designs.  Basic brush techniques and trailing glazes over glazes.  Bring any bisques and leather-hard pots to try these techniques on to the class.  Students will be responsible for firing their own works later.

Ages 18+

This workshop includes one, four-hour lesson.

Beginning Ceramics for Senior Adults with Debi Nelson

Have you ever wanted to experiment with getting your hands into clay? Well, now is your chance! This is a beginning ceramics class that gives you the chance to try out verious hand building methods and/or the potters wheel, where you’ll learn to throw various shapes and how to trim the pot. You’ll also learn various decorative and glazing techniques.

Senior Adults 62+

This class includes four, two hour lessons.

Introduction to Glaze Formation with Jon Conchuratt

Gain an understanding of the basic raw materials that compose clay bodies and glazes. Students will receive a general view of how to test glazes on a clay body to ensure a good glaze fit. We will cover: cone 6 glazes and also cone 8—10 reduction glazes; basic principles of electric and reduction effects on clay and glazes; clay shrinkage; test tiles; and how to change a glaze to make it a matte glaze. The class will be split into two sessions:

Session one: Making test tiles and applying raw glaze materials to test results.
Session two: Mixing and measuring raw materials on a gram scale, applying to tiles and firing to get results.

This class includes two, three hour lessons.

Session one will be held in the Ceramics Studio at the Chehalem Cultural Center.

Session two will be held at a pottery studio off-site.

Ages 18+
