The Youth Mariachi Program began in 2011 as a collaboration between the Chehalem Cultural Center and the Newberg School District (NSD). Over the years it has grown into thriving young performance group that allows students to come and learn the traditional instruments of mariachi music, including guitarrone, vihuela, trumpet, violin, guitar, and voice.
Once a student is given instruction in every instrument, he or she is allowed to select one for focus. Students receive individual instruction in their instrument and they participate in ensemble instruction. At least three times per semester, the group is encouraged to perform for the public—usually at festivals or events held by the Chehalem Cultural Center, but several times they have performed at offsite events, including district events, and for funding bodies.
The Chehalem Cultural Center’s new partnership with Edwards Elementary School has allowed the program to move to a larger music space where more students can easily access the program after school. As of January 2019, the program has successfully relocated as an on-site after school activity at Edwards Elementary. Starting in Fall of 2019, our rapidly growing program will be expanding to two additional public schools in the McMinnville School District.
To register, print and fill a Mariachi Registration Form and drop off at the Chehalem Cultural Center’s front desk.
